Harapan Rainforest: The Vision

Dave Watts
Harapan Rainforest: a future refuge for many threatened species
Zoom In | Hi-Res

Burung Indonesia, BirdLife International and the RSPB have a broad and ambitious vision for Harapan Rainforest. In the next twenty years, we aim to:

  • Halt destruction of habitat important to the survival of twenty Sumatran Tigers and 267 species of forest-dependent birds living in the forest;
  • Restore and rehabilitate the forest to create prime wildlife habitat;
  • Preserve elements of the forest-dwelling lifestyle previously enjoyed by the indigenous people who live in this area;
  • Provide environmental education for local communities;
  • Involve local communities in planning and offer job opportunities in sustainable forest management;
  • ecotourism and alternative income generation;
  • Provide a model for forest ecosystem restoration, carbon sequestration and sustainable management in Indonesia, with lessons that can be shared with other tropical countries;
  • Become a resource for research on rainforest biology and ecosystem restoration.
